De voorzitter van het Europees Parlement, de Duitse socialist Martin Schulz, ligt steeds meer onder vuur. Europarlementariërs beschuldigen hem van machtsmisbruik en misbruik van zijn positie voor zijn campagne om voorzitter van de Europese Commissie te worden.
De Nederlandse Europarlementariër Daniël van der Stoep wil dat het parlement in zijn eerstvolgende vergadering Schulz uit zijn functie zet.
In een dit weekeinde verspreide open brief aan zijn collega’s stelt Van der Stoep (ex-PVV, nu onafhankelijk lid) dat een EP-voorzitter ‘onpartijdig en vrij van controverse’ moet zijn. Hij vraagt op 14 april een stemming daarover.
Donderdag deden onder meer christendemocraten, liberalen en groenen in het parlement – met samen 399 van de 766 zetels – al een oproep aan Schulz om zelf zijn functie neer te leggen.
Schulz wordt kwalijk genomen dat hij een voor hem kritische passage uit het financiële jaarverslag van het EP over 2012 zou hebben laten verwijderen.
Daarin werd hem verweten informatie te hebben achtergehouden over de zaak tegen de toen van omkoping beschuldigde Maltese Eurocommissaris John Dalli. Schulz ontkent dat.
Ook zou hij geld uit zijn voorzittersbudget gebruiken voor zijn campagne om voorzitter van de Europese Commissie te worden.
Schulz is de officiële kandidaat voor die functie van de Europese socialisten.

Dear colleagues,
Last weeks we have been confronted by serious allegations aimed towards the President of our Parliament. These allegations reflect on you all, since the President represents the European Parliament and should be impartial and free from any kind of controversy.
Summary:
1) The President is abusing his powers to remove texts from a Report critical of his behaviour.
2) The President is securing highly paid jobs for his staff within the European Parliament.
3) Unlike his predecessors he never presides over votes.
4) It has been assumed that he uses money from the European Parliament to fund his campaign for becoming the next chairman of the European Commission.
The Parliament, with a small margin, has given our President a mandate in January 2012.
For the above mentioned reasons, I would like to call on this house to arrange a vote to remove the President from his office and to let him be replaced by the longest serving Vice-President until the end of this mandate.
I propose a vote on this matter at the beginning of our votes on Tuesday the 14th of April. Because, at the end it is the parliament who decides about whom it wants as their President.
