Met update – Duidelijk: NRC Handelsblad is een racistische krant. Dat is de conclusie van The Washington Post. Aanleiding is een boekbespreking van zaterdag 31 juli in NRC. Amerika-correspondent Guus Valk bespreekt daarin onder meer het boek Between the World And Me van Ta-Nehisi Coates en de huidige situatie in zwart en wit Amerika. De kop ‘Nigger are you crazy‘ (Blendle-link) valt niet in goede aarde bij opiniechef Karen Attiah. Ook de illustraties worden als aanstootgevend gezien – boven dit artikel een proeve – “If the headline weren’t appalling enough, the article compounded the offensiveness factor with its accompanying blackface figures.”
De kop ‘Nigger are you crazy?’ is een verwijzing naar een fictieve quote van de Amerikaanse zwarte opperrechter Clarence Thomas in één van de besproken boeken. Chef Boeken Michel Krielaars zegt in de Amerikaanse krant dat hij de frase beter tussen aanhalingstekens had kunnen zetten.
Valk op zijn beurt zegt nikt te maken te hebben gehad met de opmaak van het artikel noch de illustraties. Krielaars biedt zijn excuses aan:
“No, we didn’t assume it would offend Dutch readers (black or white), otherwise we wouldn’t have chosen it. Also we didn’t think about possible reactions by non-Dutch readers, because the article is in Dutch and it does not aim at non-Dutch readers. The fact that, through the web, this article travels across the world we consider a good thing. But we don’t think it’s fair if the title travels by itself, without the context of the language in which the article was written. Having said that, we may have underestimated the possible impact on the image of a newspaper spread with these illustrations and this headline. We do regret this.”
Hoofdredacteur Peter Vandermeersch wilde niet reageren, schrijft de krant.
Attiah wijst haar lezers er vervolgens op dat de Nederlandse achtergrond in ogenschouw genomen dient te worden:
“A former slave-trading power (-) with an 80 percent white population’ (-) After all, this is the country where a good portion of the population is actively fighting to keep the right to dress up as blackface character Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) every year for the holidays, despite increasing pressure from anti-racism activists and even the United Nations.”
Enfin, u begrijpt: Nederland staat er weer lekker op in het buitenland.
Attiah besluit over NRC:
“(-)By reinforcing the dehumanization of blacks, they did all of us, Dutch or non-Dutch, a disservice.”
‘De hoofdredactie’ meldt in de krant:
“Wij betreuren de keuze van de kop en de illustratie, omdat ze geen recht doen aan de genuanceerde strekking van het artikel. De redactie in Amsterdam wilde met een cynische kop de pessimistische toon van de drie boeken samenvatten. Die afweging gold ook voor de gekozen illustratie. Het was zeker niet onze bedoeling om mensen te kwetsen. De auteur van het stuk, correspondent Guus Valk, had niets met de keuze van de kop en de illustratie van doen.”
