Voor het eerst in de geschiedenis van het Euro NCAP heeft een auto de score van nul sterren behaald. De twijfelachtige eer is voorbehouden aan de Fiat Punto. De uiterst lage score heeft de auto grotendeels te danken aan de in rap tempo hoger wordende veiligheidsstandaard.
De derde generatie Punto is gelanceerd in 2005, wat het model inmiddels twaalf jaar oud maakt. Fiat baas Sergio Marchionne besloot het model niet meer te upgraden nadat in 2008 de economische crisis uitbrak.
In 2005 haalde de Punto nog de hoogste score van vijf sterren. Dat de Punto nu zo slecht scoort is vrijwel volledig te wijten aan het feit dat Fiat heeft verzuimd nieuwe en inmiddels gestandaardiseerde technieken aan de auto toe te voegen. Het gaat onder andere om gordelspanners en zij- en borstairbags.
Michiel van Ratingen, de directeur van Euro NCAP zei over de kwestie:
“The fact that older cars cannot compete illustrates the pace at which the vehicle industry is innovating safety and the willingness and ability of competitive manufacturers to meet the highest standards. Those who do not keep their cars up to the latest standards get left behind, as these results clearly show.”
“This is perhaps the strongest example of a manufacturer continuing to sell a product that is well past its best-before date at the expense of the unsuspecting car buyer. We would urge consumers to choose cars with the most up-to-date five-star ratings, many examples of which we have seen in 2017.”
In reactie op de slechte resultaten heeft een woordvoerder van Fiat gezegd:
“Safety is of the utmost importance to the FCA group. When Punto was launched 12 years ago, it was the first 5 star EURO NCAP car in its class. The importance of safety to the FCA group is demonstrated by the number of new models achieving 5 stars, for example Alfa Romeo Giulia, Alfa Romeo Stelvio and the Jeep Compass.”
