BRUSSEL | Vanmiddag om 1500 uur ontmoeten drie natuurbeschermers[1] namens 200.000 Europeanen en 130 NGO’s uit Europa, Diederik Samsom, kabinetchef van de eerste vicevoorzitter van de Europese Commissie Frans Timmermans, op het hoofdkantoor in Brussel. Ze zullen een petitie overhandigen waarin Frans Timmermans wordt opgeroepen om de Europese bossen te beschermen en niet te verbranden voor energie. Europese burgers betalen meer dan 6 miljard euro per jaar om houtverbranding te subsidiëren als ‘hernieuwbare energie’. Meer dan 200.000 EU-burgers zeggen dat dit moet stoppen in een laatste en ultieme poging om invloed uit te oefenen op de RED2 die momenteel gereviseerd wordt.
De petitie[2] roept EU-beleidsmakers en EU-lidstaten op om:
Beëindig subsidies en andere stimulansen voor het verbranden van boshout en heroriënteer deze cruciale steun naar energie-efficiëntie en hernieuwbare energiebronnen. Energie die wordt opgewekt door het verbranden van boshout uitsluiten van het meetellen voor de doelstellingen voor hernieuwbare energie Geef prioriteit aan bosbescherming en biodiversiteit.
Gezien de COVID-beperkingen zullen aanvullende steunbetuigingen voor de petitie virtueel worden gepresenteerd door een handvol NGO’s in de hele EU:
“De ‘groene transitie’ van Denemarken is gebaseerd op de transitie van het verbranden van kolen naar het verbranden van biomassa, die geen van alle klimaatvriendelijk is. Het zal catastrofaal zijn als onze fouten op nog grotere schaal worden herhaald”, zegt Mads Kjærgaard Lange, coördinator van NOAH, Friends of the Earth Denmark.
“Geef Duitsland en alle lidstaten een sterk signaal tegen het verbranden van waardevolle bossen en kom op voor een sociale, eerlijke en ecologische energietransitie in Europa”, aldus Jana Ballanthien, bosactiviste, ROBIN WOOD, Duitsland.
“Mijnheer Timmermans, namens 26 NGO’s uit Polen, vraag ik u om primaire houtbiomassa te verwijderen van de lijst van hernieuwbare energiebronnen in de RED”, zei Augustyn Mikos van de Polish NGO Association Workshop for All Beings.
“Onze bossen zijn momenteel in handen van Frans Timmermans en Diederik Samsom. D.w.z. wat ze deze maand beslissen als een formulering voor al dan niet duurzame biomassa in de herziene RED2 zal bepalen of Europa’s miljarden dollars subsidiëring zal doorgaan om de industriële houtkap en verbranding van bossen wereldwijd te stimuleren voor de komende 15-30 jaar”

De organisatoren van de petitie komen met een verbluffend resultaat – tot nu toe hebben ze in slechts een paar maanden tijd bijna 200.000 handtekeningen verzameld als resultaat van de samenwerking tussen drie platforms: WeMove, NRDC (Natural Resources Defence Council) en de Duitse NGO Rettet den Regenwald. On 15th June conservationists representing around 130 NGOs from across the EU and abroad will meet EU Commission First Vice-President Frans Timmermans’ head of cabinet, Diederik Samsom.
They will hand over a petition that clearly demands the EU must protect forests, not burn them for energy. European citizens pay more than €6 billion per year to subsidize wood burning as “renewable energy.” Over 200,000 EU citizens say this must stop.
The petition calls on EU policymakers and EU Member States to:
End subsidies and other incentives for burning forest wood and redirect this critical support to energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. Exclude energy generated from burning forest wood from counting towards renewable energy targets Prioritise forest protection and biodiversity. The petition organisers praised an amazing result – so far they have collected almost 200,000 signatures in only a few months as a result of collaboration between three platforms: WeMove, NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) and the German NGO Rettet den Regenwald. The petition is supported by 127 NGOs from across the EU and abroad.
Given COVID restrictions, additional messages of support for the petition will be presented virtually from a handful of NGOs across the EU:
“Denmark’s ‘green transition’ is based on the transition from burning coal to burning biomass, none of which is climate friendly. It will be catastrophic if our mistakes are repeated on an even larger scale”, says Mads Kjærgaard Lange, coordinator from NOAH, Friends of the Earth Denmark.
“Give Germany and all Member States a strong signal against the burning of valuable forests and stand up for a social and fair and ecological energy transition in Europe”, stated Jana Ballanthien, forest campaigner, ROBIN WOOD, Germany.
“Mr Timmermans, on behalf of 26 NGOs from Poland, I am asking you to remove primary wood biomass from the list of renewable energy sources in the RED”, said Augustyn Mikos from Polish NGO Association Workshop for All Beings.“Our forests are currently in the hands of Frans Timmermans and Diederik Samsom. I.e. what they decide this month as a formulation for biomass in the revised RED2 will determine whether or not to continue Europe’s multibillion-dollar subsidization to drive industrial logging and burning of forests globally for the next 15-30 years”
