Eindelijk concurrentie voor social media als Facebook en Twitter: oud-President Donald Trump (R.) komt met een eigen social media platform genaamd TRUTH Social. Het platform is eigendom van de Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), die daarvoor speciaal fuseert met Digital World Acquisition van Patrick Orlando. De waarde van TMTG werd daarvoor geschat op 875 miljoen dollar.
In een statement laat Trump weten:
“I created TRUTH Social and TMTG to stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech. We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter, yet your favorite American President has been silenced. This is unacceptable. I am excited to send out my first TRUTH on TRUTH Social very soon. TMTG was founded with a mission to give a voice to all. I’m excited to soon begin sharing my thoughts on TRUTH Social and to fight back against Big Tech. Everyone asks me why doesn’t someone stand up to Big Tech? Well, we will be soon!”
De Trump Media & Technology Group zegt als missie te hebben:
“Trump Media & Technology Group’s mission is to create a rival to the liberal media consortium and fight back against the “Big Tech” companies of Silicon Valley, which have used their unilateral power to silence opposing voices in America.”
Het social media platform van Trump zal vanaf november 2021 in beta-versie beschikbaar zijn. Daarna volgen een video-on-demand platform (voor abonnee’s) genaamd TMTG+ en uiteindelijk wil TMTG ook gaan concurreren met Amazon Cloud Service and Google Cloud.
In een interview met Fox News reageerde Donald Trump Junior als volgt:
“For so long, Big Tech has suppressed conservative voices. Tonight my father signed a definitive merger agreement to form what will ultimately be the Trump Media and Technology Group and TRUTH Social – a platform for everyone to express their feelings.”
De TRUTH Social-app is nu al beschikbaar als ‘pre order‘ in de Apple App Store. Daar wordt de app omschreven als:
“America’s ‘Big Tent’ social media platform that encourages an open, free and honest global conversation without discriminating against political ideology.”
Trump is niet de enige Republikein die met een nieuw platform wil concurreren tegen Big Tech. Jason Miller, een voormalig adviseur van Trump, kwam eerder dit jaar al met het social media platform Gettr. Miller reageerder op de lancering van TRUTH Social met:
“Now Facebook and Twitter will lose even more market share. President Trump has always been a great dealmaker, but we just couldn’t come to terms on a deal.”
