Londen, 16 aug. (Reuters) – De Russische president Vladimir Poetin beschuldigde de Verenigde Staten er dinsdag van de spanningen in Azië op te zwepen en beschreef een bezoek van de Amerikaanse Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi aan Taiwan als een “grondig geplande provocatie”.
In een toespraak tot een veiligheidsconferentie in Moskou noemde Poetin ook het AUKUS-veiligheidspact tussen Australië, Groot-Brittannië en de Verenigde Staten als bewijs van Westerse pogingen om een NAVO-achtig blok op te bouwen in de regio Azië-Stille Oceaan.
Zijn opmerkingen maakten deel uit van een verhaal dat Moskou energiek naar voren schuift om de oorlog in Oekraïne te rechtvaardigen en nieuwe mondiale allianties aan te gaan tegen wat Poetin de westerse hegemonie en het neokolonialisme noemt.
Terwijl de westerse regeringen de invasie hebben veroordeeld als een imperiale landroof en zich hebben verenigd in het opleggen van sancties aan Moskou, probeert Rusland actief landen in Azië, Afrika en Latijns-Amerika het hof te maken met het vooruitzicht op nauwere handelsbetrekkingen, wapenverkoop en een visie van een nieuwe “multipolaire wereldorde”.
Het bezoek Pelosi deze maand aan Taiwan, dat door China als het zijne wordt opgeëist, was “niet zomaar een reis van een enkele onverantwoordelijke politicus, maar een onderdeel van een doelbewuste, bewuste strategie van de VS om de regio en de wereld te destabiliseren en chaos te zaaien”, zei Poetin.
Poetin:
“Wij zien ook dat het collectieve Westen ernaar streeft zijn bloksysteem uit te breiden tot de regio Azië-Stille Oceaan naar analogie van de NAVO in Europa. Voor dit doel worden agressieve militair-politieke allianties gevormd, zoals AUKUS en andere.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the United States on Tuesday of whipping up tensions in Asia, describing a visit to Taiwan by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as a “thoroughly planned provocation”.
In a speech to a Moscow security conference, Putin also cited the AUKUS security pact between Australia, Britain and the United States as evidence of Western attempts to build a NATO-style bloc in the Asia-Pacific region.
His comments formed part of a narrative that Moscow is energetically pushing as it seeks to justify its war in Ukraine and build new global alliances to counter what Putin called Western hegemony and neo-colonialism.
While Western governments have condemned the invasion as an imperial land grab and united in imposing waves of sanctions on Moscow, Russia is actively courting countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America with the prospect of closer trade ties, arms sales and a vision of a new “multipolar world order”.
Speaker Pelosi’s visit this month to Taiwan, which China claims as its own, was “not just a trip by a single irresponsible politician, but part of a purposeful, conscious U.S. strategy to destabilize and sow chaos in the region and the world”, Putin said.
“We also see that the collective West is seeking to extend its bloc system to the Asia-Pacific region by analogy with NATO in Europe. For this purpose, aggressive military-political alliances are being formed, such as AUKUS and others.”
