Een auto is zaterdag ingereden op linkse tegendemonstranten die in het Amerikaanse Charlottesville (Virginia) de straat op waren gegaan om hun ongenoegen te uiten over een mars van extreem rechtse groepen. Op videobeelden was te zien dat de auto meerdere mensen schepte. Hoeveel mensen gewond zijn geraakt en hoe ernstig zij eraan toe zijn is nog onbekend.
De burgemeester van Chatlottesville heeft inmiddels laten weten dat er in ieder geval één dode te betreuren valt. Hij riep ‘iedereen die van goede wil is’ op naar huis te gaan, na een dag van onlusten in zijn stad. Diverse Amerikaanse media meldden dat de bestuurder van de auto is opgepakt. De politie heeft dat nog niet bevestigd en zich ook nog niet uitgesproken over de vraag of de man expres inreed op de menigte of niet.
