Vergeet het debacle dat Sarah Palin heette, de Republikeinse Senator John McCain is een held. Al in 2008 nam hij het op voor zijn tegenstander Barack Obama toen mensen hem voor ‘Arab‘ en ‘Muslim’ uitmaakten. Dat zijn namelijk scheldwoorden, blijkbaar. In een uniek optreden in de Senaat veegde McCain gisteren de vloer aan met Michele Bachmann en consorten die het in hun islamofobe hoofden hadden gehaald om Huma Abedin, een persoonlijk medewerker van Hillary Clinton, verdacht te maken omdat ze moslim is en familieleden heeft die volgens conservatieve roddelblogs banden zouden hebben met de Moslim Broederschap.
Bachmann en vier andere Congresleden hadden in juni een brief gestuurd naar verschillnde ministeries (Buitenlandse Zaken, Homeland Security, Defensie en Justitie) om te waarschuwen voor een ‘diepe penetratie’ van de Moslim Broederschap in de Amerikaanse regering. Collega Afgevaardigde uit Minnesota Keith Ellison – de eerste moslim in het Congres – eiste bewijsmateriaal voor zulke geweldige complottheoriën. Bachmann c.s. kwamen vorige week met een nieuwe brief gericht aan de Deputy Inspector General van Buitenlandse Zaken die de aandacht specifiek richtte op Abedin: “The Departments Deputy, Chief of Staff, Huma Abedin, has three family members – her late father, her mother and her brother – connected to Muslim Brotherhood operatives and /or organizations. Her position affords her routine access to the Secretary and to policy making.”
Kom er maar in John McCain, met je Straight Talk Express:
“To say that the accusations made in both documents are not substantiated by the evidence they offer is to be overly polite and diplomatic about it. It is far better, and more accurate, to talk straight: These allegations about Huma, and the report from which they are drawn, are nothing less than an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable citizen, a dedicated American, and a loyal public servant. […]
These sinister accusations rest solely on a few unspecified and unsubstantiated associations of members of Huma’s family, none of which have been shown to harm or threaten the United States in any way. These attacks on Huma have no logic, no basis and no merit. And they need to stop now.”

Vorige maand ging trouwens ook shock jock Rush Limbaugh los op de complottheoriën rondom Clinton en Abedin:

And Huma’s mom is best friends with the new so-called First Lady of Egypt, who is also a member of the Sisterhood. Folks, it’s Peyton place. It’s too much to keep up with.
Huma Abedin is al sinds haar stage in 1996 in het Witte Huis de rechterhand van Hillary Clinton, die haar ook wel haar ‘tweede dochter’ noemt. Manlief Bill Clinton was de voorganger bij haar huwelijk. Wat Bachmann en Limbaugh voor het gemak buiten beschouwing laten is dat de islamitische Abedin getrouwd is met niemand minder dan Anthony Weiner, een Jood. En één die in het Congres een behoorlijke havik was als het ging om Israël. Niet echt een voor de hand liggende keuze voor iemand die een staatsgevaarlijke fundi zou zijn. Meneer en mevrouw Weiner zijn overigens net bezig hun leven weer op de rails te krijgen na de ongelukkige Twitter train wreck van vorig jaar. En als we People magazine mogen geloven lukt dat aardig.
